I couldn’t let this peak summer month pass by without another garden visit (with camera in tow, of course) to share with you, and this time I’m reporting from the Dahlia Garden (or Dahlia Dell, as it’s also called) at Golden Gate Park! As a San Francisco local who lives nearby, I’m hyper-aware of how the dahlias are faring in any given week. I started spotting blooms back in June, then noticed quite a few more crop up around mid-July, so I just had to go back and get some “proper” photographs to document this very welcome “first wave.”

Here are a few varieties from the central fenced bed that stood out to me:

And here is a sampling from the auxiliary bed on a nearby slope:

With the blooming season not quite at peak and the Dahlia Show coming up in mid-August, signs of “work underway” by garden volunteers could be found interspersed among the bushes, lending a more casual, hodgepodge quality to the otherwise neatly arranged plots.

As lush as things are looking in many parts of the garden, there’s still a good chunk near the rear of the main bed that remains mostly green, which only makes me more excited for what’s still to come (and is a good reminder that late August and early September are truly the best months to view the complete tapestry of blooms, based on personal experience).

I feel quite fortunate to have such easy access to this small but mighty open-to-the-public treasure, and I hope you’ve enjoyed this glimpse into my most recent visit. Here’s to soaking up more of dahlia season in the upcoming months—rest assured there will be more updates coming your way right here on the blog!
