As promised, I’m back to share some photographic souvenirs from a peak bloom season visit to the Dahlia Garden (a.k.a. Dahlia Dell) at Golden Gate Park! While there was already plenty to enjoy back in July, late August is when it truly feels like the plants have reached their full flowering potential (probably also the reason why the Dahlia Society of California, whose volunteers keep the garden in fabulous shape, hold their annual flower show around this time). Every carefully planted shrub has its true colors on full display, each contributing a patch to a leafy quilt adorned with poms in flashy yellow, pristine white, pretty pink, warm orange, and deep red.

The main teardrop-shaped bed is enclosed by a decorative-but-not-insubstantial gate, so carrying a long or zoom lens is a must for getting deep into the plantings with your camera!

As eye-catching as the dahlias already are, it’s even more interesting to behold them juxtaposed with the succulents and other desert-friendly plantings just beyond the beds on the hillsides. You can always count on botanical and landscape variety at Golden Gate Park!

While I easily could’ve spent hours more photographing these beauties, I found myself mainly wanting to focus on sharing the feeling of joyously overwhelming abundance that I (and every other one of my fellow visitors, it seemed) experienced immediately upon catching sight of the Dahlia Garden this month. Needless to say, if you find yourself nearby, it’s a great time to see the dahlias at Golden Gate Park!
